Counterterrorism Calendar Thursday, January 25th, 2007

The National Counterterrorism Center in the US has published an unusual terrorism themed calendar. The calendar part contains anniversaries of important dates in the terrorist world, but more interesting is the reference materials - profiles of wanted terrorists and groups, blast zone distances, group logos, and nerve agent symptoms among them.

London Underground attack footage Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Here’s some footage of the failed 21 July 2005 train bombings.

Description from liveleak.com:

Closed circuit television pictures released on Tuesday showed panic erupting on a London underground train when prosecutors say a bomber tried to blow it up two weeks after 2005 attacks killed 52 commuters. British police released the images of passengers fleeing and defendant Ramzi Mohammed throwing down a backpack and racing through an Underground station, after the footage was played at the long-awaited trial of Mohammed and five others in London.

The six men deny conspiracy to murder and cause explosions, in what prosecutors say was a plot to repeat the worst peacetime bombings in London’s history, two weeks after the July 7, 2005 attacks on three trains and a bus. The silent footage shows passengers fleeing to another carriage after an apparent bang, while Mohammed, in a distinctive dark New York sweatshirt, stands up at one end of the underground train car with a large pack on his back.

One passenger, firefighter Angus Campbell, remains at the opposite end of the train car, gesturing furiously at Mohammed, who appears to be shouting and gesturing back. As the train pulls into the station, Mohammed flings down the pack and flees with Campbell in pursuit. Footage shows him sprinting through the station, his New York shirt clearly visible.

Questions about Adam Air’s Safety Record Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

There’s an interesting post at a forum called ‘Professional Pilots Rumor Network‘ where a commercial pilot expresses concerns about Adam Air’s concern for safety. The post is from August 2006 and cites contact with pilots flying for Adam Air at the time.

The plane that has recently disappeared has been confirmed as PK-KKW, which the pilot says had a abnormally functioning engine placed in it from another aircraft, only to fail at a later stage.

On the 19th, PK-KKC went in for a C-Check, despite having an abnormally high-EGT problem resulting in the crew flying under reduced N1, the engine didn’t go in for repairs at this opportunity. Instead, it was moved into PK-KKW, and continued to fly under N1 reduction until yesterday or two days ago when the engine gave up completely. The engine was repaired quickly at a cost of US$300,000. The humourous thing was, the aircraft today was put intensively to cater for Adam Air’s 14 extra flights to Bali today, and one of the owners was quoted complaining today that “all those extra flights still can’t cover that engine repair costs!”

And a depressingly accurate finish to the post.

…until one of Adam Air’s jets become a smoking hole in the ground, there will be no change.

What not to do when you see a tsunami Monday, January 1st, 2007

It’s unclear which particular tsunami this is footage of (almost certainly the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami), but it’s probably a good example of what not to do when faced with an oncoming wall of water.
